What we like

  • Built into macOS; start a recording with Control-Command-N
  • Trim, split and rearrange clips after recording
  • Exports at 4K, 1080p, 720p or 480p

What to watch

  • Exports only .mov files, not MP4
  • No webcam overlay on a screen recording
  • System audio only in macOS 27 Golden Gate or later

Best for: You're on a Mac and need a quick recording with a voiceover and a simple trim, with nothing to install.

Our verdict

QuickTime Player is enough when you need a plain recording of your Mac screen with your voice, then a quick trim before you send the file. It is already on your Mac, it records the full screen or an area, and it can split and rearrange clips. On macOS 27 Golden Gate it hands recording to the Screenshot tools, which add window recording and system audio.

It falls short when you need your face on screen, a share link or MP4 files. QuickTime has no webcam overlay, saves only .mov files and has no cloud link of its own.

For quick work updates, use a recorder with a share link such as Loom or Cap. For product demos on a Mac, look at a demo-focused recorder such as Screen Studio. For tutorials that need a timeline editor, look at an editor such as Camtasia, and for more recording control, a full-featured recorder such as OBS Studio.

Frequently asked questions

Can QuickTime record internal audio?
On macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, QuickTime’s New Screen Recording opens the Screenshot tools, which have an Include System Audio option. Otherwise it records only a microphone.
Can QuickTime save a screen recording as MP4?
No. QuickTime saves and exports QuickTime movies (.mov) using H.264 or HEVC. Apple says it doesn’t export MP4.
Can I edit a screen recording in QuickTime?
Yes, basic edits. You can trim, split a movie into clips, rearrange or delete clips, rotate or flip, and remove audio or video.
